Oṃ — a, u, m, and the silence after: the one syllable that stands for the whole.
The Śiva Purāṇa teaches the praṇava as Śiva's own name: in the Vidyeśvara Saṃhitā Śiva himself gives it to Brahmā and Viṣṇu after the pillar of fire, and says the five-syllable mantra namaḥ śivāya unfolds from it.
Chanted long and slowly, one Oṃ to a bead, it is the simplest of all japas.
