नमः शम्भवे च मयोभवे च ।नमः शङ्कराय च मयस्कराय च ।नमः शिवाय च शिवतराय च ॥
namaḥ śambhave ca mayobhave ca |namaḥ śaṅkarāya ca mayaskarāya ca |namaḥ śivāya ca śivatarāya ca ||
अनुवाद Translation — by Om Namah Shivay
Salutation to the source of peace and the source of joy. Salutation to the one who makes peace and the one who makes joy. Salutation to the Auspicious — and to the one more auspicious still.
भाष्य Explanation — our commentary, not scripture
This is the heart of the Śrī Rudram, the great Yajurvedic litany to Rudra. The five syllables na-maḥ-śi-vā-ya — the Pañcākṣara mantra this whole site is named after — are found here.
Notice the movement of the hymn: much of the Rudram addresses the fierce, untamed Rudra. Here that fierceness resolves into Śambhu, Śaṅkara, Śiva — the peaceful, the kind, the auspicious.
