nityāya śuddhāya digambarāya

tasmai na-kārāya namaḥ śivāya ||

To the one garlanded with the king of serpents, three-eyed, smeared with ash, the Great Lord; eternal, pure, clothed in the directions — to him who is the syllable “Na”, salutation to Śiva. Each of the hymn's five verses is built on one syllable of na-maḥ-śi-vā-ya.

Attributed by tradition to Ādi Śaṅkarācārya. Read the verse, its meaning and its source →
